Chinese numerology can be dated back to at least 4000 years ago. Chinese literature dating from as early
as 750 BC contains the story of Lo Shu, which literally translates to "the book of the river Lo".
The story tells of a huge flood that occurred in China at the time. The mighty King Yu was sitting on the
banks of the river Lo, trying to develop a plan to safely channel the water out to sea when there emerged from
the water a turtle with a curious pattern on its shell. The scales of the shell formed a perfect three by three grid
of squares, and within each square were a number of distinct dots. The sum of the number of dots in each row,
column and diagonal added up to fifteen, which is a very significant number in Chinese culture. This was the
inspiration for the Lo Shu Square, which quickly became the basis of Chinese numerology and is still widely
used to this day in the Far East.
Although the entire system of Chinese numerology is vast and complicated, the Lo Shu Square is the easiest
and most accurate method for interpreting a set of personal numbers. This simple mystic square leads to an
interesting and informative way to examine one's self based upon the most important number in a person's life
- the very date that their life began. It is the numeric record of birth; the starting point of one's journey through
this existence. A person's birth date is entered into the square in a specific manner, and a great deal can be
told about them using numerology to interpret the patterns of the numbers within the square.
We are all influenced by numbers every day of our life. Our world revolves around numbers. Is there anyone
who has not had, at one time or another, a strong feeling concerning a particular number? Most people have a
favorite number, and chances are that it influences important decisions at some point in their life. People have
lucky and unlucky numbers, and numbers that are intricate parts of their lives.
It can easily be said that numbers have great influence on our thoughts and actions. Are we not shaped in
ways large and small by them every day? Of course we are, and the Lo Shu Square helps us interpret the
most important number of them all in order to learn more about ourselves!
